Comprehensive Services

Communication PowerHouse is NOT your average outpatient speech therapy provider. Emphasis is often placed with ongoing direct therapy services. For example, an individual is diagnosed with a delay or problem and a licensed therapist determines qualifications and frequency of service, beginning direct instruction to remediate any delays or deficit skills in a structured manner. A skilled and experienced speech-language pathologist will incorporate some parent education into their ongoing therapy services.
At Communication PowerHouse, we are committed to providing comprehensive and personalized speech therapy services to our clients. Unlike other outpatient providers, we put equal emphasis on our four pillars of practice: Evaluation, Education, Consultation, and Therapy.
The value of our services is in providing what you need as well as what you want. Therefore, we can support you with the correct offered services:

Evaluation

At Communication PowerHouse, our speech-language pathologists use a personalized approach to evaluations, utilizing a combination of standardized and informal speech and language assessments tailored to your child’s individual needs. For younger children, this may involve playing with objects while talking about them, answering questions about pictures, and pointing to or naming pictures. Our evaluators are attentive to sensory needs, distractions, and the need to change activities, ensuring that your child feels comfortable and engaged throughout the process.
We encourage parents to bring any relevant medical documentation, including previous evaluation reports and individualized education plans (IEPs), to help our evaluators better understand your child’s developmental history and known needs.

The evaluation will combine assessment results, parent interviews, and professional observations and interactions to determine whether your child is functioning at an age-appropriate level. At the end of the evaluation visit, our therapist will indicate whether your child qualifies for therapy services.

Following the appointment, you will receive a comprehensive written report highlighting the formal and informal assessments administered, as well as observations and parent reports indicating your child’s strengths and weaknesses. This report will make recommendations based on the evaluation, and your speech-language pathologist will discuss with you the next steps that you are interested in taking.
Most insurance plans cover evaluations, and clients are charged only the amount allowed by their individual carriers that is not paid by their plan. At Communication PowerHouse, we are committed to providing comprehensive evaluations that will help determine the most effective treatment plan for your child’s speech and language needs.

Education

Communication PowerHouse offers a variety of educational programs to support our clients and their families. During therapy appointments, our speech-language pathologists communicate with parents and caregivers about the targeted goals, skilled intervention strategies, and progress of the child. We also conduct re-evaluations every 6 to 12 months to assess growth and progress over time and establish a new baseline for the next skills needed. These re-evaluations are critical for insurance coverage and prior authorizations for services.

We provide education for parents through verbal explanations, developmental milestone data, written reports, and handouts. Additionally, we offer group classes and webinars to educate parents, caregivers, and community service providers on specific topics related to communication skill development. Our education programs are tailored to the needs and requests of our clients and community members.

Any education services provided outside of therapy sessions are priced separately and require opting-in and pre-payment. We encourage parents and caregivers to let us know what programs and group classes they would like to see offered in the future. Please contact us to share your feedback and requests.

Consultation

While a parent with a concern may call us any time for a free, brief consultation about their child or needs, our consultation services are also available for additional caregiver training; collaborative efforts with educational or medical support teams; and among vendors or equipment suppliers regarding needed technology and right-fit support for your child. We can provide in-service training at your child’s daycare or school; work with new health/nurse aides to understand your child’s needs; and collaborate with other professionals to discuss your child’s strengths and needs.

A strong consultation results in all personnel in the child’s daily environment knowing how to best use strategies and prompts that are appropriate to support your child at their current communication level.

Parents may choose to invite their speech-language pathologist to hear the results of a neurological/psychological/auditory assessment that may impact our care of your child and/or an invitation to attend an IFSP/IEP meeting with other providers to discuss strengths and needs of your child with other professionals. For children with severe communication deficits, we can consult on aided language boards, communication devices, picture schedules, or specific prompts to help them become successful communicators. When parents are working to order or purchase adaptive augmentative communication or assistive technology equipment for their child, we are available to consult and provide our professional opinions to support you. Please understand that consultations like these come with a separate charge that is not currently covered by insurance and will be private pay. We invite parents and caregivers to reach out to us and let us know how we can support them.

Therapy

Speech and language therapy is tailored to meet the needs of each person. Communication skills vary greatly, which means that the goals targeted in therapy will vary from child to child. The frequency of appointments will also differ based on the severity of the communication difficulties. During therapy sessions, a speech-language pathologist or assistant will work with your child to target specific goals. Some sessions may involve play, while others may be more structured and academic in nature. During these sessions, the therapist uses direct instruction (teaching) and practice (drills) to work toward independence with specific communication skills. The therapist will keep regular data on your child’s progress, including their consistency in meeting that goal and the type of prompts and support needed to achieve each target. Parents are often asked to practice a skill or activity at home without the expectation of keeping data; however, a therapist can often give you guidance regarding how to simplify goals and how much support you should give the child to help them move forward to independent success.
Parents are encouraged to observe and participate in therapy sessions. Parents and caregivers should learn how to target the child’s communication goals independently. Children make better, faster progress when a daily caregiver learns from the pathologist and implements strategies and practice regularly in the home environment. If a parent is not able to attend or participate, the final minutes of a therapy session may be saved for education and consultation regarding that appointment’s activities and the child’s needs for home practice. While insurance does not cover education and consultation services provided by the speech-language pathologist, we offer as much as we can as a courtesy to our ongoing therapy families. The insurance coverage of ongoing therapy is highly dependent on diagnosis and specific medical plans. If you have any questions about therapy sessions or your child’s progress, please do not hesitate to ask your therapist. Additionally, we welcome your feedback and suggestions to help us provide the best possible therapy for your child.
